Administration for Native Americans, Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance
Cheesh’na Tribal Council has been awarded a grant through Administration for Native Americans, Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance, for three years of the Upper Ahtna Language Preservation: “As it has Always Been; There will Always Be” Project.
Project Year: One
Objective 1: Research
By 2024, through engaging with fluent elders, consolidating print resources developed through past preservation efforts, and consistent access to interested youth, the Upper Ahtna Language Preservation: As it has Always Been; There will Always Be Project will gather usable resources that support Upper Ahtna language preservation for the Cheesh’na people.
Objective 2: Language Lessons and Technological Preservation
Upper Ahtna language is severely endangered, to help preserve it for the Cheesh’na people, each year of the grant program (2021 – 2024), the Upper Ahtna Language Preservation: As it has Always Been; There will Always Be Project will engage instructors and learners in language instruction/preservation, implement technology-based strategies that provide continuous access to language resources, and support youth and Elder interactions.
